Outlet
After putting this blog on hiatus for a year because of school and work, I’ve realized how important it is to have an outlet from this type of working environment. Seems everyday there are more and more patients coming at the ER, which makes the working load continuously overwhelming. Regardless the increase in resources that management is able to bring in order to compensate the amount of sick people that shows up sicker each time, we still end up with an unbalanced ratio between staff and patients.

So why continue doing this. This job that underpays, this job that overwhelms, this job that monopolizes our thoughts and emotions every single minute of the day. For the past few months I’ve been going through the different carrier alternatives that could substitute my stressful environment. I won’t go through the analytical details of my dilemma, but I have somewhat concluded that being an ER nurse does bring me a satisfactory well being that I seek in both caring and knowledge wise. Every job has its ups and downs. This one especially, requires the ability to possess the necessary tools to face and deal with the more difficult moments.

For instance, I’ve noticed that vacations are important. When we’re young, we neglect them because we’ve been so poor during our studies that we just want to work work work to make lots of money. After 6 years, I can confirm that every single day off is well appreciated. Hobbies are also useful to switch ourselves off from our working mode; like exercising, or gardening, or in my case, writing this blog. Which brings me to my first observation, the importance of having an outlet from stress and everyday worries. I will make it my personal mandate to write weekly about my experience as an ER nurse, which hopefully could also be an outlet for readers.
